Broderick

Conversation 1: 11/28/16
Me: “Morning Broderick. I need your help. It seems the strangers that wanted to steal the books have kidnapped Viola. I have a detective that has a few leads but he won’t give us intel for free. A report has been given to the council but since Viola doesn’t officially work for the Weather it seems doubtful it will be approved. I need you to help push the proposal so we can get info on the books and who is distributing them. You can say she is a Weather informant if it helps. And I would mention hiring a 3rd party will give us some deniability if this becomes a inter-district conflict”
Bro: “What is the report? What do you need to get approved?”
Me: “Approve the detective to search for the missing person”
Bro: “So the people you submitted the report to, they don’t seem to care about what’s happening with these books?”
Me: “The report was submitted to the council and it’s just Viola. The books… I mean if you want to reveal that you can”
Bro: “Ah, so this isn’t Weather Society business? You’re asking for Weather Society funding for a personal matter?”
Me: “I think the books are a danger but officially yeah it’s personal. I thought we were kinda investigating the books as a group”
Bro: “How have we been investigating the books as a group? We haven’t done any work on it together in either official WS terms or unofficial terms.”
Me: “Okay then. Richard and I have been investigating it.”
Bro: “Well, that’s interesting. What exactly did the report to the Council say?”
Me: “I didn’t write it myself so I can’t say what it says exactly. It should be a report that says that Viola hasn’t shown up for several days and that its suspected she has been kidnapped with a recommendation for the detective to look into the case”
Bro: “And it doesn’t mention the books at all?”
Me: “It shouldn’t if people did what I asked properly”
Bro: “Good. I can’t help you push that through. That’s not Weather Society business and I don’t have enough favor curried with the other Council Members to get a personal favor pushed through. I can, however, submit a report on the books as a potential threat to the district that needs investigating. I won’t mention Viola but hopefully she’ll be found safely during the process. Is that satisfactory to you? How much does this investigator cost?”
Me: “The report has it probably”
Bro: “You don’t know how much the investigator costs? Who submitted your report for you?”
Me: “I got Salisbury to submit it. I was trying to avoid tying myself directly to this in case it got messy”
Bro: “Alright, well are you okay with alternative I offered?”
Me: “Sure. Just know a lot of people are gonna be snooping in about this”
Bro: “What does that mean?”
Me: “It means several people were trying to find the books, privately”
Bro: “Okay. I need you to tell me everything you and Richard know about these books for my report.”
Me: “I can’t tell you about Richard. I know the people I told you about earlier tried to find them. I know the detective we are hiring was trying to find them”
Bro: “What’s that detectives name?”
Me: “He goes by… Falconflight”
Bro: “That’s not enough information to go on. What else do you know about the books?”
Me: “They have a magical hole? Also might be able to use them as transport. The door to the Apple was busted from the inside out”
Bro: “I don’t think that’s enough to warrant me telling the Weather Society they’re dangerous to the district unless you have more.”
Me: “Ummm they are resistant to tearing? All I got. If the possibility of an unknown force having the ability to teleport around the city at will isn’t enough to convince someone I don’t have anything”
Bro: “Alright, I’ll see if I can put a report together but I’m not promising to submit anything. Hopefully Richard knows more so we can make this report a slam dunk. It would also hurry this process along if you two would write me letters of recommendation speaking to my character.”
Me: “How would the letter of a random employee help the report?”
Bro: “I was able to become a fully functioning Council Member before completing my official trials for certain reasons. There are, however, some other members who are unhappy that those trials haven’t been completed yet. Letters of Recommendation are part of the process. I have others who will write it, but those may take a few days. If you and Richard both write one for me that will speed things along, which maybe important for Viola’s sake.”
Me: “Okay? I can write a letter”
Bro: “Alright. I’ll have some notes consolidated for the report by the morning. Hopefully Richard is able to fill in some key details.”
Me: “Oh. Where did you go to buy the homeless shelter?”
Bro: “What? That’s out of nowhere. I know a property dealer for a couple of districts. Why?”
Me: “My apartment is small. I need a bigger one”
Bro: “Yeah, no problem. I can set up a meeting for you.”
Me: “Does he not have an address I can go to?”
Bro:“He probably does, but I’ve never taken the time to learn it. But one of my employees knows him and I send messages that way. I’ll let him know I’ve got someone interested in his services. Mind if I give him your address?”
Me: “Go ahead”
Bro: “Do you know a Mr. Fontain? Or have you heard of him?”
Me: “Nope”
Bro: “…How well did you know Viola? Did you spend a lot of time around her?”
Me: “Broderick you were there when we met her”
Bro: “Yes, and that’s the only time I’ve seen her. I’m asking YOU how much time YOU have spent around her.”
Me: “I’ve seen her the past few days until she was kidnapped? Why?”
Bro: “Somebody left me a finger that likely belonged to a halfling female a couple of nights ago. I didn’t know who it belonged to, but now I’m thinking it very well could have been Viola.”
Me: “How many nights? Like a week, a day, what?”
Bro: “The package arrived last night sometime between 7-10pm”
Me: “Yeah it might have been her? Did the package have anything else?”
Bro: “The courier said it was from a Mr. Fontain, but there wasn’t a note. Just a finger”
Me: “I told you people were looking for these”
Conversation 2: 2/15/17 – Log
Me: “Good morning Broderick”
Bro: “You said that a hand reached out and tried to grab you through one of the square books, right?”
Me: “Oh. Uh. Yes. Feels like a long time ago but yes”
Bro: “Can you describe the hand/arm? Was it abnormally long or short? Was it wearing a glove? Any identifying rings or markings? Hairy?”
Me: “Heavily armored. I don’t even remember seeing skin. And it was covered in sand. Maybe long?”
Bro: “Oh, that’s too bad. I thought I had found the source of that arm, but that doesn’t match the description at all. But I can go back to that lead and see if it leads me to a long, heavily armored arm.”
Me: “You found someone connected to the books? Who was it?”
Bro: “I don’t know their name. I witnessed what looked to be a ritual from a hidden location. Unfortunately, my vision was pretty badly obscured so I couldn’t see much. But I did see … something… with pale, hairless arms reaching into the books. Didn’t seem unusually long though.”
Me: “Are we talking like a humanoid figure? Could you not see the rest of him?”
Bro: “I don’t even know if it was a him. Seemed humanoid enough though, just something about the way it moved didn’t seem right.”
Me: “Where was this?”
Bro: “I…don’t know? I could smell saltwater in the air, so I think it was near the docks. But the Mids is thin in so many places that I could have been on the border of several districts and still smelled the saltwater.”
Me: “So you were out in the streets?”
Bro: “I really don’t know, Pearce. It was night, and not familiar.”
Me: “So somewhere some mysterious white armed thing is reaching through books. What was he doing with them?”
Bro: “You’re asking questions I don’t have answers to. I told you I can try to get more information.”
Me: “Okay… well yeah I guess we need to follow up on that. If they’re dealing with the Friends of Man they’re a danger to the city. So. Speaking of dangers to the city. Do you know House Dunwick? Dunni’s family?”
Bro: “Uh yeah, I’ve heard of them” It’s obvious I’m more familiar with the name than I’m letting on.
Me: “I umm, I tried to investigate the place. Umm Broderick is there some sort of Senation police you can report him to?”
Bro: “Why were you investigating the Dunwick’s? How did you get in? How did you even know Dunni was in that family?”
Me: “I investigated Dunni. She was from that house. I snuck past/bribed guards. I thought Reva’s death had to do with Dunni. So I figured I’d investigate. Do you know what they’re doing there?”
Bro: “Where? In Dunwick Manor? When did you go? What did you find out?”
Me: “I ended up in his basement… He’s … got demons Broderick. He’s experimenting on demons. I found vials and vials of that milk crap. He had demons like I’ve never seen Broderick. Broderick the demons could MOVE. THROUGH. WALLS. Do you know how terrifying a demon is? Try having it slide out of the floor”
Bro: “I will help you, and I won’t report you for espionage to the Senate, on the condition that you answer all of my questions honestly”
Me: “Report me? You need to report him! The man is working with demons!”
Bro: “WHICH IS WHY I NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING YOU KNOW!”
Me: “Okay. What do you need to know”
Bro: “Start from the beginning. What did you find out about Dunni? How did you trace her back to the Dunwicks?”
Me: “I found a book. To normal people it’s just a random book but if you know it’s based off real events it has clues. Names are changed but events lined up with my investigation of Dunni. I went from there”
Bro: “Where did you find this book? How did it line up?”
Me: “It was given to me by Viola”
Bro: “What is this book? Can I see it?”
Me: “Sure. Let me go get it”
DM: You go get the book and return.
Me: “We’re going to be late. You want to discuss this inside?”
Bro: “No, Richard can’t know about this. He’s in close with Fischer, who is dealing under the table with either the Friend of Man or the Temple, maybe both. And Dunwick has strong ties with the Temple. We can’t risk this getting back to him.”
Me: “In that case sure. I was hoping you could deal with it since you know the channels. So Richard doesn’t need to know. Although Fischer working with the temple is alarming. Shouldn’t we do something about that?”
Bro: “I’ll let you in on what I know about Fischer as a show of good faith, so that you’ll answer the rest of my questions about Dunwick.”
Me: “Okay? I’ll say upfront I don’t know much more about Dunwick. I was not expecting Demonic Lab when I went in. Just maybe some family paintings”
Bro: "He was repeatedly sending messages to Brother Nathan, the Temple member who was studying underneath the cemetery. The one who had one of the books. I was only able to intercept of them that said “Excellent work, friend”. I suspect that Fischer was the one that killed Brother Nathan once we found him, to cover his tracks. Or, for all I know, to incite the war as part of his plan to rise to power."
Me: “That is a very concerning accusation”
Bro: “I haven’t brought it up before because I don’t have much in the way of proof and I didn’t know who I could trust. But I’ve been looking into it ever since we were sent to investigate Brother Nathan’s murder.”
Me: “Unfortunately I can’t shed any light onto the situation. This is the first I’m hearing of this”
Bro: “I understand. Just be wary. If you feel up to it, look into it yourself. Perhaps we can stop whatever betrayal he’s planning together.”
Me: “Actually I do have something. I’ve been looking into Friends of Man and I know that he’s housing some under house arrest. He being the War Council so I assume him. For what purpose I don’t know right now”
Bro: “Good to know. Back to Dunwick. Can I see the book?”
DM: You hand him the book.
Bro: “Fascinating. Do you mind if I keep this to look through it? If it has been so useful to you, I might be able to use it as evidence against Dunwick. Perhaps it will lead me to more evidence.”
Me: “Go for it. Just don’t lose it. I can’t buy another”
Bro: “Thank you.” I pocket the book. “Now. You were investigating Dunni and found out she was part of the Dunwick family. But what made you think you needed to investigate the Dunwick Manor if they had been estranged for so long?”
Me: “Grasping at straws. I told you before I didn’t really have any good leads. You explained the Senation border so I had a good idea where to try and sneak past”
Bro: “How did you get past the border?”
Me: “I snuck by during the night”
Bro: “Yes, but how?”
Me: “When they weren’t looking I went past them. Usually how sneaking past works”
Bro: “Alright. And was it just you that snuck it? I’m interested to know how incompetent our border forces are.”
Me: “Are you going to report that I snuck in? I was hoping to avoid that”
Bro: “I won’t report you specifically, but I will say that I found evidence that people came across illegally. Security is very important to us right now, now answer the question.”
Me: “I might have had help getting in but I will NOT say who. If that’s a dealbreaker we can drop the conversation”
Bro: “…Fine. Will you at least tell me if this person or persons just helped you through or if they accompanied you?”
Me: “No. You’re not going to report me to Dunwick are you? Because it sounds like you’re trying to know who all knows this secret”
Bro: “No, I’m not. I have long suspected that Dunwick is an ardent supporter of the Temple District within the Senate. Now, were you just helped in or were you accompanied in?”
Me: “I won’t answer that. It doesn’t change anything”
Bro: “Accompanied then. But you’re right, that detail isn’t pertinent yet. Now how did you breach the Manor’s security? I have attempted before, and failed.”
Me: “Book helped. One of the guards was a close friend of Dunni’s. I used a letter that was supposed to be from her to lure him away. Then snuck in”
Bro: “Come on Pearce, I need all of the information.”
Me: “Okay. A certain someone might have said to go meet her. Not a letter”
Bro: “Okay. How did you know this guard was her friend? What’s the guard’s name?”
Me: “I told you. It’s in the book. Names are changed so probably not his real name”
Bro: “Okay, so you got into the Manor. Walk me through what happened once you were inside.”
Me: “I found his study. Tried to find some evidence Dunni ever existed or if he had to deal with her death. I got caught”
Bro: “Did you find any evidence?”
Me: “I didn’t find any info”
Bro: “Continue.”
Me: “Senator caught me. I tried to knock him out before he could signal the guards. I failed. Guards were called. They didn’t like that. I fled to a chokepoint to prevent getting flanked. Ended up being the basement staircase. Fought off some guards before retreating. Ended up in the basement”
Bro: “And what did you find in the basement?”
Me: “Locked doors. Luckily someone has…” Pearce pulls out a skeleton key. “So I went in one and tried to hold up”
Bro: “Interesting. So this was able to open the doors in the basement?”
Me: “Failed the first one but there were four. It eventually worked”
Bro: “I have seen you use that before. I assume you’re not willing to let me have it. Will buying a similar one have the same effect?”
Me: “Sure. Skeleton Keys are all the same. And no I will not let you have it”
Bro: “Alright, so you’ve holed up in one of the rooms.”
Me: “Turns out you can’t flee inside a room and it was pitch black. So I just kinda stood in there. Eventually they figured out where I was. They wanted me to leave. I said no. So Dunwick left a few guards to guard the door and that’s when IT showed up. The modified rock demon”
Bro: “Excuse me, what?”
Me: “I TOLD YOU IT MOVED THROUGH THE GOD DAMN WALLS. IT WAS MADE. OF. STONE
Bro: “How did you get out?”
Me: “Turns out stone demons cut like normal demons”
Bro: “You…you killed him?”
Me: “No. I made it retreat into the floor. Luckily for me the damn thing killed the guards that were left to keep me in. I used their torch and investigated the room and found out it was some lab. And saw all the vials of milk. With that thing gone I did more searching and found a back-exit to the facility. I got out that way. And escaped”
Bro: “Did you find anything else in the lab?”
Me: “Lab-stuff. Vials, Large Tubes, etc”
Bro: “Books. Paperwork. Lab notes. Things I can use as evidence.”
Me: “I didn’t see any paperwork”
Bro: “Damn. Okay. Tell me more about this other passage you found.”
Me: “It’s in the book. It’s some sort of tunnel”
Bro: “Where did the tunnel let out?”
Me: “Bluepoles market”
Bro: “What? That’s across the entire city.”
Me: “Magic tunnel” Pearce says with a shrug
Bro: “So it was magical. How could you tell? Were there any defining features? Also, I’ll need the address for where this lets out.”
Me: “It took us about 10 min to cross the city. How do you explain that besides magical?” I give the address.
Bro: “Was there any interesting characteristics you noticed about the tunnel?”
Me: “Uhhh it was uniformed stone?”
Bro: “Nothing else unusual? For something like that I’d expect…some indication.”
Me: “There were some black specs that were kinda unusual? I didn’t really stop to look. Rock demon wasn’t dead and here I was in a tunnel of stone”
Bro: “Right. The black specs. Did you notice anything about them? Anything at all?”
Me: “I just said I didn’t stop. Broderick this demon was larger than a man and could phase through stone. I found an escape and I didn’t look back”
Bro: “Yes or no, Pearce. These black specs could be responsible for moving the tunnel around. It’s been so hard to pin down their properties.”
Me: “They might be? They were weird. You’re free to go test them.”
Bro: “So you didn’t notice anything about them besides that they were weird?”
Me: “Not really. Okay actually there is one thing. The rock demon had the specks. Like when I cut him”
Bro: “Okay. So you escaped. And they knew you infiltrated. Would you ever be willing to try to enter the tunnel again? Assuming we could find it, that is.”
Me: “Ha. Nope. I told you so you could go get the Senate authority and deal with that. The entrance is locked and looks like it’s part of a sewer access. All you’ll get from me”
Bro: “Damn. Okay. I don’t have enough right now to report him directly. He has the district by somewhat of a stranglehold because of his tunnel. Everytime I get close to pinning it down, it moves. But I will talk to some of my allies in the Senate. This is all really useful information to start with. We’ll start building a case.”
Me: “… the tunnel moves?”
Bro: “Oh, and Pearce. Besides the vials of Milk, did you remove anything else from the property?”
Me: “I did not”
Bro: “I hope that’s true, for your sake. Dunwick is very devious. Alright, let’s go in, I think Richard has been waiting long enough.”
Conversation 3: 3/31/17 Log
Me: “Morning Broderick. I was hoping you could clear up a few things for me”
Bro: “Alright, I’ll help if I can.”
Me: “So during the Harrison fight I saw you had the gauntlet that belongs to the Friends of Man. I would like to know more about it”
Bro: “Oh? What makes you think it belongs to the FoM?”
Me: “That’s the exact same gauntlet that came out of the square book. A fact that I think we both knew since you asked about it”
Bro: “I had suspected that yes. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a ton of information about it. I only just realized what it was when I asked you about it, and I haven’t had a chance to look into it further.”
Me: “Who gave it to you?”
Bro: “I took it from Brother Nathan’s room the time we visited him when he was still alive. Finding out this gauntlet’s connection to the FoM books is a big reason I suspect Fischer of working with them.”
Me: “If you suspected it’s origin back when you asked me, why not just show me the gauntlet? Or at least tell me about it?”
Bro: “I accused Fischer of betraying the district, and you were neutral to the idea. I decided it was safest to learn more before showing my hand.”
Me: “Well I don’t know about Fischer but anything revolving around the Friends of Man I am keen on learning. Going forward. So what does this gauntlet do? I saw the … arm extending part. Is that it?”
Bro: “That’s as much as I know about it. Based on that, the fact that Brother Nathan had a book, and what you said, I imagine it’s used for reaching through portals in a more safe manner. But that’s just a guess.”
Me: “I see. I’d like to see this gauntlet later but if what you said is true it’s not a high priority. Do you have any other items belonging to the Friends of Man?”
Bro: “Not that I’m aware of.”
Me: “I see. That only leaves me with one more topic. Have you been in contact with the bear?”
Bro: “Why?”
Me: “Yesterday he left me a note saying he wanted to meet. Apparently he said that you told him I work for … a certain group.”
Bro: “You met with him? What about? Is he trying to steal from me again?”
Me: “No he wanted to meet that group. Did you tell him?”
Bro: “No, I didn’t tell the bear anything about you.”
Me: “So you haven’t talked to him about the Reclamation?”
Bro: “I’ve already answered that. You’re going to believe that criminal over me?”
Me: “You said you didn’t discuss me. Did you discuss the Reclamation?”
Bro: “I haven’t talked to the bear in a very long time, definitely not since you even told me about the Reclamation.”
Me: “I see. I guess that was just a lie. I apologize for the grill Brodie but that’s obviously a secret I don’t like getting out”
Bro: “Of course. You impressed the importance of that upon Richard and I when you told us. I would never tell a low life like the bear something sensitive like that. So what was he meeting with you about?”
Me: “He wanted to set up a meeting between me and the Reclamation. Wouldn’t tell me what it was about. I have no intention of doing so”
Bro: “That’s good, I’m glad you don’t trust him. He’s a liar, and dangerous.”
Me: “I agree. Anyway. To work?”
Bro: “Yes, let’s go to work.”

Conversation 4: 4/19/17 – Log
Bro: “I know about the Harriers, and I know how to contact them.”
Me: “Well it looks like they’re about to do something big in the Mids”
Bro: “I tried to infiltrate their group, but their initiation is tricky. I won’t be able to attempt it again. However, you and Richard could. And I know the trick.”
Me: “Go on”
Bro: “There should be an initiation tonight, at midnight. They have recruitment several times a week. They’ll ask you some random personality questions. Then they’ll want to tattoo your forehead to prove your loyalty. Unfortunately, if you agree to the tattoo, they’ll kill you. They don’t want people foolish enough to mark themselves so visibly.”
Me: “So… they want to kill you since you failed?”
Bro: “I’m not so easy to kill. But be warned, those tattoos are damn near impossible to get off.”
Me: “So they gave you the tattoo and then attempted to kill you? That seems… inefficient.”
Bro: “There were several at our initiation. Only one refused the tattoo. They rounded up everyone who had the tattoo, and started killing them.”
Me: “… Well that is definitely one avenue to explore”
Bro: “We can maybe do that tonight after Richard’s thing if it doesn’t run too long. If it does run too long, and we haven’t found the Council Members, we can hit another initiation later this week.”
Me: “Yeah. Let’s see about Richard’s thing”
